Enlisted, June 5, 1917, in Company D, 1st Georgia Infantry Regiment, in Savanah , GA. The 1st Georgia Infantry reorganized for the World War, he was assigned to the 118th Machine Gun Battalion, 31st Division. Deployed to France, on Oct. 6, 1918, transferred to Machine Gun Company, 330 Infantry Regiment, then to Company D, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. Returned to the States, March 6, 1919, aboard the USS Leviathan, docking at Hoboken, NJ. He marched in the " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, on March 25, 1919. Discharged from the service, April 5, 1919.
