Allan (or Allen?) Jacob (went by A.J.) Rominger was born 13 Jan 1821 (at probably Friedland), Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. He was the second of two known children of Joseph Rominger (1790-1873) and Susannah Greter Rominger (1791-1843). After Susannah died, Joseph remarried to Tabitha (though census records list her as Delila or Delilah) Cheshire (1815-1872) and moved to Iredell County, North Carolina. It is not known where Joseph or Tabitha are buried.

A.J. married Belinda Walk (1823-1900), daughter of Johann Joseph (went by Joseph) Alexander Walk (1773-1839) and Elisabeth Goss Walk (1783-1854) on 07 Dec 1841 at Davidson County, North Carolina. In 1850 the family was living at Surry County, North Carolina. In 1860 and 1870 the family was living at Caldwell County, North Carolina. By 1880 the family was living at Connelly's Mills, Iredell County, North Carolina. A.J. may have inherited land when his father Joseph Rominger, who had lived in Iredell County, died in 1873. A.J. was a Postmaster at Connelly's Mill, which is located about 3 miles northeast of Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina.

A.J. and Belinda were the parents of nine known children, eight girls and one boy. Six of the nine children lived to maturity. A.J. and Belinda also raised a boy (John Robert Rominger), thought to be born out of wedlock to one of the daughters. The nine children were:

1. Mariah Luiceda Rominger (1843-1843)
2. Rebecca Elizabeth Rominger Hawkins (1844-1920)
3. Mary Louisa Jane Rominger Cottrell (1846-1914)
4. Susannah Emaline Rominger Gilbert (1848-1880)
5. Beatus (baby boy) Rominger (1853-1853)
6. Laura Clementine Rominger (1855-1856)
7. Josephine Victoria Rominger Gilbert (1857-1919)
8. Martha Caroline Rominger Feimster (1861-1901)
9. Julia Mae Rominger (1866-1955)
10. John Robert Rominger (1875-1950)
