Silver Star Citation
Silver Star Awarded posthumously for actions during the Vietnam War The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Timothy G. Carter, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an 81-mm. Mortar Forward Observer attached to Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 15 July 1969, during Operation PIPESTONE CANYON, Company F was executing a cordon maneuver southwest of DaNang when the lead element came under a heavy volume of fire from hostile soldiers occupying a well-fortified bunker complex. Reacting instantly, Lance Corporal Carter, armed only with a pistol and hand grenades, initiated an aggressive assault against the enemy emplacement. Dauntlessly maneuvering across the fire-swept terrain in complete defiance of hostile rocket-propelled grenade and automatic weapons rounds impacting around him, he resolutely continued his fierce attack and was suppressing the enemy fire when he was mortally wounded by fragments of a mortar round and a rocket-propelled grenade delivered by hostile gunners for whom he had become a target. His heroic and determined efforts inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the death of four enemy soldiers and the apprehension of a prisoner in addition to the seizure of several items of enemy weaponry. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Carter contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. Action Date: July 15, 1969 Service: Marine Corps Rank: Lance Corporal Company: Company F Battalion: 2d Battalion Regiment: 1st Marines Division: 1st Marine Division (Rein.), FMF
