Allen and brother Malcolm LOCKHEED (surname legally changed in 1934)were pioneers of California`s Aviation industry. They became interested in airplanes when teenagers. The brothers first worked as auto mechanics and designed and built aircraft in their spare time. In 1913 they flew their first plane over San Francisco Bay. In 1916, they relocated to Santa Barbra and continued to build aircraft; however they were not a sucess. Malcolm went back to autos and designed a successful braking system using hydraulics for the first time. HYDRAULIC BRAKES became the standard for autos which made him wealthy. Allen stayed with aircraft and in 1926 he designed the popular VEGA airplane. Orders for the VEGA began to pour in and the LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT COMPANY became a sucess. Through growth, aquisitions and mergers the company finally became LOCKHEED MARTIN.

In his later years Allen continued to be an advisor to Lockheed management until his death in 1969.
