Henry S. Schaefer, a prominent citizen of Marion Twp.,Mercer County, Ohio was born November 22, 1864. He is the son of Barney Schaefer, who was born in Germany. (This bio has Barney arriving in the USA at age 2 with his parents which is incorrect) He arrived in the USA with his Mother, Elizabeth Gatten, his step-father,Henry Althoff Sr and half brother Henry Jr. His father died in Germany. In 1849 Elizabeth and Henry died in Cincinnati from cholera. Barney and his half brother, Henry Althoff were placed in an orphans home under the Althoff name. They remained in the institution until it burned down. They were then sent to live with an uncle of Barney that lived in Mercer county.

Henry married Christina Heyne on Jan.22,1889 in Mercer County. He worked as a locomotive engineer for 7 years. He also served as Justice of Peace for 3 years and was elected Mayor of Chickasaw on April 14,1895. In politics he was a democrat and in religion he was Catholic.

In the 1920 census Henry & Christina were living in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. He built their house at 1148 Holly Avenue where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Christina, my great grandma, Died in 1957 when I was 13 years old, leaving me with fond memories. We had 5 generations through my sister, Marilyn. They were Christian Heyne Schaefer,Elizabeth Schaefer Clune,Marie Clune Downing, Marilyn Downing Haas & her daughter, Kathleen born in 1954.

Henry S. Schaefer, 79, died at his residence, 1148 Holly Ave. at 7:00am Wednesday. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of America and the Holy Name Society of St. Anthony Church. Survivors include the widow, Christina, six sons, John, Stephen, Aaron,Markus, Raymond of Tulsa,Okla. and Leo of Providence R.I. three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Clune, Mrs. Anna Henry of Perrysburg, Ohio; Mrs. Josephine Bradley of Lansing, Michigan. 23 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; a brother Bernard Schaefer of Sebastian, Ohio. Four sisters, Mrs. John Heyne of Celina, Mrs. Katherine Stammen of Dayton, Mrs. John Wheel of Burkettsville, Ohio and Mrs. Mathew Heyne of Ellinwood, Kansas. Luthman funeral home, Calvary Cemetery.
