Nancy Lucinda "Nannie" Smith was born 2 June 1841 in Haywood County, North Carolina, the second of five children of Jacob Smith (1807-1883) and Rebecca Justice Smith (1807-1896). She married Philander Clark Allen (1838-1910), a Confederate Civil War veteran and farmer, on 30 November 1868 in Haywood County, NC. They had three children: Lena Euella Allen (1869-1969), George Oscar Allen (1874-1950), and Nannie May Allen (1880-1881), who was just 6-months old when she died. Nannie died of tuberculosis on 29 November 1880 in Waynesville, NC at the age of 39. She was thought to be interred at Bethel Community Cemetery, where her husband was interred 30 years later.

My great uncle, Linden J. Coward (1896-1974), wrote of her in his Coward-Rogers family history book:
Nannie [Lucinda] Smith Allen, the first wife of P. Clark Allen, was the daughter of Jacob Smith and Rebecca Justice Smith. She was born June 2, 1841. Nannie was of medium height and fair. She had a high nose, high forehead, full mouth, light brown eyes, and auburn hair.
Nannie was a school teacher. She taught in several places in Haywood County, N.C. She also taught in Missouri.
She was the mother of three children: Lena Euella, George Oscar, and Nannie May. She died of tuberculosis, November 29, 1880.
(Linden J. Coward, NATHAN COWARD-JANE ROGERS FAMILY AND RELATED FAMILIES: A FAMILY HISTORY. [South Carolina], June 1953, p.8)
