Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. Born in Opelousas, Louisiana, he was hurdle sprinter nicknamed "Hot Rod" and was awarded the Track and Field News Athlete of the Year Award in 1971. During the early 1970s, he dominated the 110m hurdles, setting or tying the world record five times and winning the event at the 1971 Pan-American Game. At the 1972 Summer Olympics Munich Germany, he won the Gold Medal in the 110-meter hurdles event. After 1973, he turned to professional and by 1980, was ranked fifth in the world. He continued to be world ranked until his final retirement in 1983. In 1993, Milburn was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. He lost his life in an industrial accident near Port Hudson, Louisiana, at the age of 49.
