Jesse was born to William Martin Lewis and Hannah Snethen in 1834. Records most often identify his birth place Indiana. Yet other records indicate he was born in Missouri or Kentucky. Jesse arrived in Oregon by wagon train in 1853 with his parents and siblings. Jesse got a land claim next to William and Hannah on the Willamette River near current day Independence, Oregon.

In 1856 in Polk County, Oregon he married Sarah E. Bounds. They had at least three children,Sopha, John and Lillie/Lydia. Sarah and Jesse divorced in 1876. Their children continued to lived with Jesse. In 1878 he married Lucinda Alford Payne who had a son named Champion Taylor Payne. Jesse and Lucinda they had a son, Leston, in 1880 and a daughter, Cleo in 1883. Lucinda died in 1889. About 1896 he married Ida Lorena "Rena" Royer Burdick. She had two daughters, Antoinette and Gertrude Burdick. Jesse helped raise all these children - step, half and full siblings - as well as a Rena's niece, Fern Royer.

In his younger years he was a farmer in Polk County, Oregon and later became a merchant of dry goods in Cottage Grove, Lane County, Oregon. Jesse died of a heart condition at the age of 85. He is buried near his wife Rena, her mother, his son John and John's family.
