Their children continued to lived with Jesse. In 1878 he married Lucinda Alford Payne who had a son named Champion Taylor Payne. Jesse and Lucinda they had a son, Leston, in 1880 and a daughter, Cleo in 1883. Lucinda died in 1889. About 1896 he married Ida Lorena "Rena" Royer Burdick. She had two daughters, Antoinette and Gertrude Burdick. Jesse helped raise all these children - step, half and full siblings - as well as a Rena's niece, Fern Royer.
In his younger years he was a farmer in Polk County, Oregon and later became a merchant of dry goods in Cottage Grove, Lane County, Oregon. Jesse died of a heart condition at the age of 85. He is buried near his wife Rena, her mother, his son John and John's family.
