HUNTINGTON
Miss Mary E. Titus, 77, widely known educator, died Wednesday night in Cabell-Huntington Hospital here.
Miss Titus served as president of the Classroom Teachers of the National Education Assn. and three years as president of the West Virginia Classroom Teachers Assn., and was on the staff of the NEA for 14 years until 1962 when she returned to her home in Huntington.
She was active in the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employes and helped to initiate passage of legislation which improved retirement benefits for teachers.
Miss Titus was associate vice president of area three of the National Retired Teachers Assn. and in June of this year was elected to the executive committee of the National Retired Teachers Assn.
She received her education in the Huntington public schools, attended Ward Belmont School in Nashville, Tenn., received a bachelor of arts degree from Marshall University, a master of arts degree from Columbia University Teacher College in New York, and received an honorary doctorate of pedagogy from Marshall University in 1955.
Miss Titus had taught at Cammack Junior High School in Huntington, and instructed summer school classes at Marshall and Salem Colleges.
Surviving: sister, Mrs. Mildred T. Grade of Huntington. Service will be 11 a.m. today in Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary here with the Rev. Garrett H. Evans officiating.
Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington.
