William D. Joyner was born on March 21, 1933, the oldest of seven children of William and Lessie Mae Joyner. He passed away peacefully on Dec. 4, 2005, surrounded by his loving family. Bill, known affectionately as "Jock" among family and friends, spent his formative years in Branchville.

He graduated from Virginia State University, where he was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. After graduation, he embarked on a 20-year career in the U.S. Army. His military assignments took him all over the world, including tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam. He retired in 1975, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Bill spent another 20 years working in private industry in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He retired from Diversified Engineering Corporation and then relocated to his home state of Virginia and lived in Virginia Beach at the time of his death. In Virginia Beach he was an active member of the Democratic Club and the local branch of the NAACP. Among his many volunteer activities, he enjoyed working with the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center.

He enjoyed traveling, visiting relatives and collecting famous quotations and "words to live by" in a treasured binder. He also enjoyed reading, especially autobiographies about historic figures. He spent his Sunday mornings watching his favorite news talk shows such as "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation."

He is survived by his beloved Sandra Forte; his children, LTanya "Tammy" Joyner of Hampton, Ga., Dr. Byron Joyner of Seattle, Wash., and Kent Joyner of Rosemount, Minn.; two grandsons, Adrien Mombo- Caristan and Brandon Franklin, both of Hampton; four sisters, Eleanor Parikh of Gaithersburg, Md., Gwendolyn Holman of Keswick, Va., Yvonne Harris of Milford, Conn., Juanita Hobbs of Maplewood, N.J.; and a brother, Reynold Joyner of Lakewood, N.J.; four aunts, Paula Wynn of Williamston, N.C., Sallie Raymore of Neptune, N.J., Mable Webb and Carrie Cobb, both of Washington, D.C.; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews.
