Maudie was born in Elk Garden, WV. Her mother was Stella Peters, and her stepfather was Charles Herbert Rowe. She was married in Taylor County to Charles Claude Fortney by Eugenius Ford at his residence in February, 1915.
After having resided in many northern West Virginia coal mining towns, Maudie spent her later years in National, WV, where she was a member of the National Church of God. At her death at St. Vincent Pallotti Hospital on May 6, 1968, she was survived by all seven children, 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
