William Thomas "Bill" Pirkle was born June 12, 1874 in Hall Co., GA, being the fifth child of Sanford Taylor Pirkle and Vianna A. Hawkins. Sanford Taylor left his family sometime in the late 1870's and Vianna raised her six children with help from her parents, Benjamin and Sarah Lyles Hawkins.

January 16, 1898 in Jackson Co., GA, Bill marries Sarah Levisey "Sallie Vissey" Brown, the eighth child of Isham "Isum" Jack Brown and Mahala Jane Ivey. Sallie was born June 5, 1882 in Jackson Co., GA.
Children of this union were:
Theo Docia Pirkle (1898-1914)
Winburn Robert "Shine" Pirkle (1900-1960)
William Eli "Willie" Pirkle (1901-unknown)
Winslow "Pirk" Pirkle (1903-1960)
Ruth Pauline Pirkle McKeown (1909-1963)
Lillie Jean Pirkle Miller (1912-1984)
Lois Irene Pirkle Lane (1916-2003)
Infant Pirkle Boy (1919-1919)
Infant Pirkle Girl (1921-1921)

Their first four children were born in Jackson Co., GA, Theo Docia in 1898, Winburn Robert in 1900, William Eli "Willie" in 1901, and Winslow 1903.

October 12, 1908, Bill purchased a farm on Lookout Mountain above Ft. Payne, DeKalb Co., AL and moved his wife and 4 children there. In 1909 Ruth Pauline was born and in 1912 Lillie Jean was born. In 1913, Bill moved his wife and 3 daughters to Fort Payne, leaving his 3 sons tending to the farm. Theo Docia went to work at the Davis Hosiery Mill and in July 1914 contacted Typhoid Fever and died. Docia was buried in an unmarked grave. Bill moved his family back to the mountain farm and in 1916 Lois Irene was born.

Bill raised all kinds of apples and it was a known fact that his orchard and garden was clean enough to eat off the ground. He witched for water and his well was 98% pure. Although the house had burned and had been rebuilt, the well was still in use in 1968 but now was located on the back porch. Bill had a syrup mill on the farm and once they fired it up, it remained working till everyone's syrup was made. Don't know for certain when sons, Winburn, Willie, and Winslow, left home but they were only teenagers.

In May 1919 a stillborn baby boy was born and buried at Walker's Chapel on Lookout Mountain. Then July 23, 1919 Bill sold his farm and purchased property on Rutherford Ave. (now known as Godfrey Ave) in Fort Payne on November 20, 1919. Bill went into partnership with a Mr. Brock in a mercantile and grocery store on First & Gault and at one time the DeKalb County Court House was west of his store.

March 30, 1921, Sallie died when giving birth to a stillborn baby girl. Baby was placed in the same casket as her mother and was buried in Fort Payne. On October 15, 1921, Bill sold his home in Fort Payne and purchased a farm on Sand Mountain on November 28, 1921 and moved with his 3 daughters, Ruth, Lillie and Lois to Henagar.

On May 20, 1923, Bill married Leona Coady, a 31 year old unmarried school teacher but this marriage did not last. Later was told that Leona had given birth to a stillborn child born in 1924 and buried in the Henagar Cemetery in Henagar, DeKalb Co., AL in a grave marked as Pirkle Infant.

After the break up of his marriage, Bill sold his farm at Henagar on Jan. 26, 1924, auctioned off everything that he owned with the exception of 1 plow, 2 cotton mattress, a few bed clothes and 3 trunks in which one contained his home grown, hand rolled tobacco. After the auction, a friend drove the Pirkle family to Chattanooga, TN where they boarded a train bound for Littlefield, TX. The train was snowbounded in Snyder, TX and the family was force to depart the train. Bill located temporary housing in Snyder and placed his daughters in the local school. After Ruth's marriage in May 1925, Bill departs Snyder and moved with Lillie and Lois to Dallas. Lillie and Lois enter the Dallas school system but in 1926 after reading an advertisement in the Dallas newspaper, Bill pulls his daughters out of school, and they caught a train headed for Athens, TX. Ruth and her husband, Rodney, were now living in Jacksonville, TX. Bill farmed several places in Athens.

After Christmas in 1929, Bill moves to Malakoff with Lillie & Lois but moved back to Athens after Lillie moved to Jacksonville in September 1930 to live with Ruth and her family. On October 16, 1933, Bill had been chopping wood all day long, came home, after eating his supper, reared back in his chair, gave a gasp and was dead. Buried in the Athens Cemetery.
