Although the headstone says Seales, the name is actually Seale, as shown when William applied for a Confederate pension in 1913, signing his name. His death certificate is also Seale. However, family members seemed to use both names.

Born to Elijah Seale (1824-1875) & Elizabeth Ann McMillan Seale (1826–1919), both of Mississippi, who married in 1844. The Texas death certificate states William's father's name as Elijah Seale.

William married 1) Jamesy Holmes (1850-about 1887) on Apr. 11, 1867, in Wilkinson County, MS. The family moved to Texas in 1881. Jamesy's grave is lost.

• Lilly Emma Seale (1872-after 1880; died young?)
• John Thomas Seale (1873-1947)
• Elizabeth Ann "Lizzie" Seale Brown Langston (1875-1960)

William married 2) Georgia Emma Scroggins (1863-1927) of Alabama in 1891 in Madison County, Texas.

• Hattie Emma Seale Shelton Taylor Slaughter (1895-1992)
• Lilly May Seale Goree (1897-1986)
• Robert Brooks Seales (1901-1972)
