On July 27, 1908, on an summer outing, Violet age 12 and some other children were wading in the shallow water of the Buffalo Bayou, when suddenly Violet accidently fell into the water and while atempting to get back up she drifted into deeper water. Her mother and a friend jumped into the water in an attempt to save Violet but to no avail. Violet drown and the friend was almost strangled to death in her attempt to save Violet.
