He was born May 10, 1916, in Chester, S.C.

Adams moved to Lorain from Buffalo in 1958 to work for the Ford Motor Company, from which he retired in 1985. He was a deacon at Compassion Missionary Baptist Church in Lorain and a founding member of The Sonlight Gospel Singers, its acappella Gospel quartet.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Geneva; sons Donald Adams of Lorain and Gerald Adams Sr. of Odessa, Fla.; daughters Bonnie Copeland, Gillie Richards and Ramona Franklin, all of Buffalo; and 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his son, James Adams Jr.; and daughter, Nanie Adams.

A musical tribute and wake will take place Friday at 6 p.m. at Compassion Missionary Baptist Church, 520 W. 22nd St., Lorain, where funeral services will be Saturday at noon. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
