John R. Carrick, Widely Known On North Shore, Dies
John Robert Carrick, 89, well know resident of the North Shore, died Sept. 25 at his home in Markey Township. Better known as "Rob," Mr. Carrick spent 33 years in Markey Township during his last period of residency, although his identification with this county extended back to the early 1900's.
After his marriage, he established his family at Houghton Lake about the turn of the century, then he moved in 1918 to Elm Hall, just west of Alma. The family lived there until about 1931 when Mr. Carrick returned to Houghton Lake where he remained until his death.
Mr. Carrick suffered a fractured hip in a fall nine months ago and had been in failing health since that time. As a younger man, he was employed in an electricity generating plant at Alma and after he came to Roscommon County he worked in the woods as a logger and sawyer.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Robert Ball of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints at Roscommon at the Steuernol Funeral Home in Roscommon Monday. Burial was made in Markey Cemetery.
Mr. Carrick enjoyed good health until he fell and was injured last December. Neighbors saw him in all kinds of weather walking to his mailbox some distance from his home. He was active in many interests in the area near his home. After his injury, he was unable to walk and in recent weeks he began a decline in health.
He was born in Wood County, Ohio, July 24, 1876 [Birth Certificate says July 10, 1876], the son of Abram and Elizabeth (DeMunn) Carrick. He was married March 10, 1900 at Shepherd, Mich., to Miss Mertie Casner who survives. His church affiliation was with the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints at Houghton Lake.
Besides the widow, he is survived by five daughters, six sons and one brother, Nathan Carrick, also of Houghton Lake. The daughters are: Mrs Edna Phillips, of Elwell; Mrs. Bertha Jenkins and Mrs. Ray Persall, both of Vestaburg; Mrs. Willard Davis of Saginaw; and Mrs. Glenn Crossett, of Flint. The sons are: Frank and Earl, at home; Robert, of Houghton Lake; Roy, Gerald and Bert, all of Vestaburg. Also surviving are 56 grandchildren, 112 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
