Richard was the eldest son of Henry C. and Martha A. Cardwell. He was killed at the Battle of Malvern Hill, Henrico Virginia on 1 July 1862.
He left a widow, Mary M. Lacy Cardwell, and a young son, Emmet F. Cardwell. All three are bured in Ettrick Cemetery.
