ROY D. CARRICK, 96

EDMORE -- Roy D. Carrick, 96, of Vestaburg, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Schnepp Health Care Center in St. Louis, Mich., with family members by his side.

Roy was born Nov. 21, 1910, in Roscommon, to Robert and Mertie (Casner) Carrick.

He married Verna Flashaar on Nov. 14, 1938. She preceded him in death on Nov. 11, 2004. Roy worked in forestry, at Alma Trailer and as a stonemason for his brother-in-law. He served several years as a Boy Scout leader in Vestaburg. He loved photography and was an avid archer, hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and received many commendations and decorations, including the Purple Heart.

In addition to his wife, Roy was preceded in death by his parents; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Owen and Patricia Bethka Carrick and Loren Carrick; a granddaughter, Dawn Carrick Murphy; five sisters, Edna, Bertha, Ruth, Myrtle and Marie; and four brothers, Gerald, Bert, Frank and Earl.

Roy is survived by three children, Ione and Larry Keeler of Riverdale, Dianne Sanders of Winn and Dexter and Ginger Carrick of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Carrick of Roscommon.

In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service with full military honors will take place at the Markey Township Cemetery, Houghton Lake, over Memorial Day weekend.

Stebbins-McCullough Chapel, Edmore, is serving the family.

Roy is buried on the left side of his wife, Verna. (The inscriptions for Roy and Verna are reversed incorrectly on the front face of the headstone and the WWII Memorial for Roy is on the back face of the headstone.)
