Joseph Terrell attended Kemper school and then began the study of law in the offices of his brother, A.W. Terrell. In 1852, he was admitted to the bar in St. Joseph, Missouri. He set out on a visit to the Pacific coast. From 1853-1854, he practiced law in Santa Clara, California. From 1854-1855, he practiced law in Monterey, California. In 1855-1856, he practiced law in Oregon. In 1856, he returned to Virginia. In 1857, he visited his brother, Judge Terrell in Austin, Texas, and then set out to return to California. Mr. Terrell went to Fort Worth in February of 1857 and was persuaded to join a friend, D.C. Dade in partnership practicing law.
