Dolores (Slane) Campbell, 99, of Traverse City, MI passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Virginia and Charles Siffert. Dolores was born at home, on May 3, 1907, in Logan County, Ohio, to the late Andrew and Emmelia (Witter) Slane. She spent her childhood around Lakeview, Ohio, and was a 1925 graduate of Centerburg High School, Centerburg, OH. At the time of her graduation from high school, she was living with her sister, Maude Dowden and family.

Her first husband, Elmo Mooney of Centerburg, OH died in 1930. She married Ralph Campbell, also of Ohio and he predeceased her in 1966.

Family and friends will remember her for her dedicated service to her family as a skillful homemaker and she lovingly sewed many garments for her six daughters. Dolores grew her own vegetables, fruits and raised chickens. She spent countless hours working on the family farm and took pride in her special horse radish, pies, homemade bread and home canning. She made her own cottage cheese, butter and served many delicious meals from whatever her land had to offer. Dolores had a ready smile and a hint of Irish wit that was with her to the last days of her life.

Grandchildren will remember Grandma's love of antiques and beautiful dishes. Her love of flowers kept her yard so pretty for as long as she was able. She was known to tend the graves of those long gone, carrying water in containers from her home to the cemetery.
Dolores came from a family of hunters and she was known by those her knew her as a pretty good shot. Down through the years she welcomed many hunters to her home and table and enjoyed the stories of the quest and the camaraderie.
Dolores was an avid reader and had mastered the art of letter writing. She was known to keep correspondence flowing for decades to family members and friends long after letter writing was replaced by telephones and email.

Surviving are four daughters: Ida (Lynn) Gendregske of Gladwin, MI., Virginia (Charles) Siffert of Traverse City, MI, Eileen (Ken) Johnson of Thermopolis, WY, and Helen (Garry) Hosmer, of Sparta, MI. She left eighteen grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Debbe Yost Warner, forty-four great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Dolores Campbell was preceded in death by five sisters, and four brothers, also two daughters, Elma Mooney Brooks, and Dolores Campbell Yost and one grandson, James A. Mooney.

The family sincerely thanks all family members, friends and care-givers who so willingly gave their love and support.

Private services took place at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2006, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with Elder Dale Beavers officiating. Burial was at the Hamilton Township Cemetery in Clare County. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a contribution toward a scholarship memorial to be established in Dolores Slane Campbell's name at Mid Michigan College.

On a personal note, Dolores, was called "Doll" by her siblings.
