Arthur John Nyman was born in Petoskey and attended Petoskey Schools. In 1903 he graduated from the Graves Normal School. From 1896 until 1903 he was a boot black on the city streets. During World War I he was a Sergeant with the Quarter Master Corps. Beginning in 1903 he was a shoe salesman for the Clark Company in Petoskey, and then became a traveling shoe salesman until 1924. At that time he went into the the coal and fuel business, as “Nyman the Coal Man.” He retired October 23, 1957.

For over forty years, Arthur and his brother Emery, and their father, John, were executives of the Penn Dixie Cement Corporation, and its predecessor, Portland Cement Company. They were active their entire live in civic affairs, as well as in the legendary John Gallster Hunting Club. In 1942 Arthur’s brother, Emery, was elected Mayor of Petoskey for 5 consecutive terms.

Arthur was a member of the American Legion, the Elks, and the
Durand Lodge. Mr. Nyman died at the Beverly Manor in Petoskey where he had been a patient. Services were held Tuesday al the Stone Funeral Home. The Reverend Albert Kalkbrenner, of the First Presbyterian Church officiated. The family received visitors at the Stone Funeral Home. They suggested anyone wishing to honor the memory of Mr. Nyman to contribute in his name to the Emmet County Cancer Society.

Gertrude, the wife of Mr. Nyman, passed away in 1944.

He was survived by his brother Emery Nyman, and first cousins, Richard Washington Johnson of Petoskey and Ashland, Wisconsin, and Elva Johnson Seldon, of Petoskey. The cousins were the niece and nephew of his mother, the late Dessie Johnson (Mrs. John) Nyman. Dessie was the older sister of Otto Johnson, Elva and Richard’s father.

Note: Arthur’s home at 915 Emmet Street, formerly his parents home, was located near the Hankey Lumber Company and the Nyman Coal Company. The Nyman home is on the National Register of Historic Homes: "Nyman, John, House (added 1986 - #86002039)
