NORFOLK - Cmdr. Thomas Prioleau Whaley, U.S. Navy retired, 71, passed away Jan. 1, 2006, in his residence. He was a native of Pensacola, Fla., and was raised in Coronado, Calif.
He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1957 and served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War retiring as a commander after 24 years of service. During his various tours of duty, he served on ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. He was in the Vietnam War as the executive officer of the USS Ozbourn (DD846) where the ship conducted sustained operations against enemy aggressor forces for more than two years. His tour of duty ashore included Naval Intelligence at the Pentagon and shipboard safety at the Naval Safety Center.
Cmdr. Whaley was often cited for his professional knowledge, good judgment, imitative and devotion to duty. Among his many citations and medals are Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with combat "V" and Gold Medal, secretary of the Navy Commendation for Achievement, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal with star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with five stars and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association. He was a former longtime member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, and currently a member of the Church of Ascension in Norfolk. An avid fisherman and boater, he was active in many organizations supporting and encouraging the cleanup and preservation of the Chesapeake Bay.
Phyllis and Tom enjoyed traveling extensively, especially to the Orient, highlighted by two trips to China. They shared an unconditional love for each other.
Besides his wife Phyllis Brown Whaley, he is survived by two sons, Thomas P. Whaley Jr. and William Long Whaley and his wife Mitchel Amyot Whaley; two greatly loved stepsons, Edward Bliven Winslow and wife Stephanie, Charles Andrew Winslow and wife Shelly; three grandchildren, Chadwick, Chantal, and Cameron Whaley; step- grandson, Eric Winslow; brother, Capt. William Semmes 'Fish' Whaley,USN Ret.(USS Deluth,LPD-6), and wife Julianne of Coronado, Calif., along with several nieces. He was predeceased by his daughter Emily Whaley and his first wife Lois Lambert Whaley.
A memorial service was held Friday at 3 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, Talbot Hall Road, Norfolk, conducted by Fr. David W. Davenport. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, handled the arrangements.
