Shirley Roberta Mears - born on April 21, 1937, in Prichard, AL, died peacefully at home on December 17, 2010, after a long bottle with brain cancer. She was a faithful member of University Church of Christ where she taught children's Sunday School classes for many years. She retired from Bell South in 1989 and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was preceded in death by her father, W.L. Mears, Sr.; mother, Thelma J. Mears; brother, W.L. Mears, Jr.; and sister, Frances Weaver. She is survived by sisters Elizabeth Till of Daphne, Elaine McCraney of Fairhope, Teddy Mears and Gay (Charles) Hendrickson of Mobile; brothers, Jack (Doris) Mears of Meridian, MS and Eugene (Helen) Mears of Muldrow, OK; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. The family would like to offer a special thanks to the caregivers of Odyssey Hospice, special family friend, Karen Williams, and niece, Valecia Madden. Funeral services will be held from University Church of Christ on Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the service hour. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the University Church of Christ Mission Fund, 5651 Zeigler Blvd., Mobile, AL 36608 or to your charity of choice.
