Eugene Debs Erwin was born October 9, 1934 in Hill Top, Arkansas the son of Debs W. and Virchie F. (Burnett) Erwin. Eugene died Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was 76 years of age. Gene was a graduate of Ft. Smith, Arkansas High School. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Arkansas. He was a veteran having served during the Korean War in the Map Making Division of the United States Army stationed in the US. He married the former Miss Marianne Miller on June 2, 1959 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. They moved to Broken Arrow in 1977 from Little Rock, Arkansas. Eugene was a Civil Engineer for the Corps of Engineers for 40 years. He was awarded the De Fleury Medal which is an honor bestowed upon those that provide significant contributions to Army Engineering. He enjoyed working crossword puzzles, watching game shows, hunting, fishing, and hiking as a young man. He was an Assistant Scout Master and organized a Scout Troop in Little Rock. He was president of the Broken Arrow Noon Lions Club. He was very active in the Evangelism Ministry at First United Methodist where he taught Sunday School and helped with contacting First Time Visitors. After retiring, he enjoyed writing Inspirational Poetry. He is survived by, wife, Marianne, daughter, Lisa and husband John, sons, Eddie and wife LeAnn, Michael and wife Monica, grandchildren, Casey, Matthew and Jordan. Services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Monday, December 20, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Broken Arrow. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, Sunday at Hayhurst Funeral Home.
