Rufus became involved probably first with his uncle Rev. Jonas Wendell in the First Advent Movement, then spun off into his own form of religious beliefs. He wrote many religious articles and it is said he even wrote his own version of the Bible. The spin off of the First Advent religion became what is known today as the Seventh Day Adventist group.

He was also fluent in the language of the deaf mutes and visited the Institute of the Deaf in Rome.
