Berkeley's parents were Palmer Morey Taylor and Lena Cornelia Hill. He worked on a dairy farm in Longmeadow, MA. In his spare time he became a BSA scoutmaster. Interested in aviation he built a glider in 1912 and took a course at the Curtiss Flying School, Newport News, VA. In 1917 he was licensed as a pilot by the Aero Club of America. On June 4, 1917 he registered for the draft. He worked as a civilian flying instructor at Wichita Falls, Texas during 1918 and 1919. Commissioned as a lieutenant in the Marine Corps he served as a flight instructor at an aviation detachment in Miami, FL. Records of his military service during WWI are not available. However, he is listed in VA files as a war veteran with a claim and an Adjusted Compensation Account. After the War he flew as a mail pilot at Washington, DC. On October 7, 1933 he married Narcissa Rose Money in McLean, VA. He was assigned to Veterans Work Program (VWP) Camp 1, Windley Key Key, Florida in 1935. On the evening of Monday, September 2, 1935 (Labor Day) a hurricane destroyed the three VWP camps in the Florida Keys. Because of the gross negligence of the Florida State officials responsible for the camps a train from Miami arrived too late to evacuate the veterans to the mainland. Berkeley was one of the 259 veterans killed. His remains were never positively identified but the preponderance of evidence indicates his remains were recovered and cremated where found. On November 14, 1937 remains from the various cremation sites were gathered and interred in a crypt at the Florida Keys Memorial. None of the 166 veterans buried in the crypt have ever received the US Government grave markers they are entitled to. The Town of Islamorada which owns and maintains the Memorial has refused to place any markers for the veterans. In July 2017 a memorial marker was placed for Berkeley at South Florida Florida National Cemetery.
