Note - based on notes from the back of a photo -
there was a 5th son... a Wilbert SCHMIDT who died young. (in IA ?)

Louise was born in Cedar County Iowa, near Lowden, IA.
Around the time of the Great Depression, their son Arthur
moved to Dixon, Lee (?), Illinois and worked on the dam construction (?).
His parents moved to Dixon shortly thereafter (?) and rented (?) a house.
They rented a small house NW the stone railroad arch on 1st (?) Ave,
and later they rented a house on Van Buren St. (There may have been
another house before the 1st Ave house, perhaps College Ave ?)

Art & Wilma Schmidt owned (?) a house just a door or two away on Van Buren
where he raised his two children, Marilyn Schmidt & Bob Schmidt.
Art & Wilma Schmidt later moved to a small farm just north of Harmon IL.

Louise (KRINEBRING) SCHMIDT kept up many German traditions, including not letting kids into the living room to see the Christmas tree. She also made her
own sauerkraut, etc.. Her husband worked at a factory on the SW side of Dixon (?) cars, engines, cable?... When he died, Louise no longer wanted to stay in her house and she visited all her children - staying with them for a little while. She died in bed at the home of her daughter, Mildred (SCHMIDT) POWELL later WICKEY. Everybody said she died of a broken heart just a few months after the loss of her dear husband, William Charles SCHMIDT. People say her husband spoiled her & let her cheat at cards ;-)

These were the "German" grandparents.
She kept the Christmas tree behind closed doors in the Living Room at their first house in Dixon (by the railroad stone arch).
You could see it from the outside, but you didn't get into that
room until Christmas!

She also made homemade sauerkraut in crocks on the back porch.
