DIES AT RAIL CROSSING

FATAL CRASH--A truck driven by Julius Van de Berghe, Wyandotte County truck farmer, was killed in a collision with an M.-K,-T. passenger train at a Southwest Boulevard intersection today. The truck landed 250 ft. from the crash point, where the train came to a stop on a tresle over Turkey Creek. Part of the truck and Van de Berghe fell to the creek bed. Returning to his farm in Wyandotte County, route 5, Kansas City, Kansas, De Beurghe had been to the city market selling his vegetables. Two brothers who farm with him, had driven to the market also, and came across the tragedy as they were returning, some time afterwards. Joseph Van de Berghe, one of the brothers, identified the victim.
The train was delayed two hours. It was due in the station at 7:55 o'clock, and had slowed down at the US Highway #50 viaduct, about two miles southwest of the crash scene, according to A.R. Pratt, the conductor in charge of the train. The passengers included several army general prisoners, being taken to the disciplinary barracks at Fort Leavenworth.
WITNESS TELLS OF CRASH: "Just before the crash, the train was going fairly slow & the truck fairly fast" according to a witness, Elgin Mitchell, Kansas City, KS. He had driven over the crossing a few minutes before, on his way to work.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lou Van de Berghe of the home, Route #5, Kansas City, KS; a sister, Miss Joanne Van de Berghe, Portland, OR; five brothers, Emil Van de Berghe, Henry Van de Burghe, Joseph Van de Burghe & John Van de Burghe, all of Route 5, Kansas City, KS; William Van de Bourghe, Shawnee, KS; four sisters, Mrs. Emma de Caney, Mrs. Louise Verstraete, Mrs. Mary de Brambander & Mrs. Anna Dusselier, all of Shawnee.
