DEATH OF SAN FERNANDO PIONEER HELD ACCIDENT, DRIVER EXONERATED

A coroner's jury this week brought in a verdict of accidental death and exonerated Donald Long of 702 N. Maclay avenue, driver of the car which struck Elmer E. E. Bailey on Wednesday last week at the intersection of Fourth and Maclay at about 8:00 p.m. Bailey was removed to the San Fernando Hospital where he died shortly before noon the following day.

Bailey was well known in the community having first come here in 1900. He was a familiar sight on his bicycle and had covered many states in his numerous trips on that vehicle. For several years he was employed as a special delivery messenger at the local post office.

He was closely identified with the Holiness church of this city but attended special services at many other churches. He joined the Salvation Army when he was young, and maintained his attendance at their services.

Relatives Surviving

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from Noble's Chapel and were in charge of the Holiness church with Rev. W. B. Rugh bringing the message. Internment was at Oakwood cemetery, beside his sister, Mary E. Mahn.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Rose Stretch of Dowagiac, Mich., and numerous nieces and nephews. Left to mourn him in this city are Leafy Curry, Gloria Bobo, and Owen L. Mahn. Two other nephews, Claude L. Welch and Clayton V. Welch, are residents of Glendale and Los Angeles, respectively.
