Alton, John R. "Rod" Ann Arbor, MI

John R. "Rod" Alton died Thursday, October 23, 2008 after a brief illness. He was 62. Rod was born October 9, 1946 in Pontiac MI, the son of Robert J. and Margaret N. Alton. He graduated from Western Michigan University and did post graduate work at Michigan State University. An avid Notre Dame fan he withstood lots of ribbing from his neighbors who are diehard UM fans, a challenge he relished in this maize 'n blue town. As a State of Michigan employee one of his proudest assignments was working under a consent decree for Federal Judge Charles Joiner to implement the closing of Plymouth Regional Center. Prior to his retirement he worked as a consultant for the Macomb-Oakland Regional Center providing technical support in their ongoing accreditation process. He is survived by his spouse of 39 years, Dianne Bailey Alton of Ann Arbor, daughter, Katherine (Kate) E. Alton of Durham, NC of whom he was so proud as a nurse at Duke University Medical Center, sister, Barbara (Bobbie) Day Cuyler and her husband, Russell (Skip) of Collierville TN and brother Robert J. Alton of Royal Oak. He is also survived by nephews Matthew and Stacy Day of Arlington TN and Todd and Michelle Day of Clifton, NJ and many cousins. We are so grateful for our closest family friends, Donna Gardner, Jude Kelly and Rick Reinsmith who "hung out" with us at the hospital over these last few weeks. He was a member of a hunting and fishing lodge in northern Michigan and spent numerous weekends enjoying fly fishing and the camaraderie of fellow sportsmen, especially Peter Lynch, Larry Kelch, Tom Renwick and Bill Erb who have been an continuing presence in his life. He will also be missed by our Yorkie, Bart, Rod's ever faithful companion. A special thank you is extended to all of the physicians, nurses, techs and other support staff who touched his life while he was in St Joseph Mercy Hospital. Their energy and attention were a gift to him and our family. A private celebration of his life will be held. Contributions may be made to St Joseph Mercy Hospital, Palliative Care Program, PO Box 995, Ann Arbor MI 48106 or the Carter Center (carter center.org) Attn: Office of Development, One Copenhill, 453 Freedom Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30307. Arrangements entrusted to Muehlig Funeral Chapel Ann Arbor, MI.
