Son of Rev. Erastus Miner and his wife, Marilla Harding. Although his family settled in Warren county, Illinois during the 1840's, George was shown as born in Connecticut in the 1860 census. That is the only census in which his birth information would have been given by his parents. In all other census records, George claimed he was born in New York, where most of his siblings were born. It appears George was born while his father was pastor of the Baptist church at Mystic, near Groton, Connecticut. The family soon after returned to Warren county, Illinois.

George married Mary W. Parker on 7 October 1874 in Des Moines county, Iowa. A son, William, was born about 1876, and daughter Jennie Bell in 1878. An unnamed infant daughter is shown in the 1880 census of Monmouth. Another child was stillborn in 1883.

George and Mary were divorced by 1900, with George shown living with his sister, Mrs. Diantha C. Miner Brady in Chicago. It appears George then married Inez, widow of his nephew, Dewitt Brady Jr., and moved to Missouri. George's older brothers had both settled in Missouri at the conclusion of the Civil War.
