US Army Retired LTC Howard R Kuhn served with the Army during World War II as a surveying engineer with the US Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1968. In retirement, he was credited as the founder of Competition Model Rockets and was a Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) volunteer, team member and manager. Kuhn served from 1979 to 1995 as chairman of the FAI's International Aeromodelling Commission (CIAM or Commission Internationale d'Aero-Modelisme). He is considered to have contributed greatly to advancing the sport of model rocketry. Kuhn was known as an innovator of the model rocketry competition piston launcher, vacuum-formed plastic nose cones, capsules used for egg lofting competitions, and "Manta", a boost glider. The latter was featured in a 1969 "American Aircraft Modeler" magazine article. He created the company Competition Model Rockets, which he ran into the late 1980s. He was awarded Bronze medals at the 1972 1st World Space Modelling Championships and in 1974 for class S5-Scale Altitude, at the 2nd World Space Modelling Championships. Held in high esteem and respected as a premier space modeling rocketeer, in 1989 he was the first space modeler to receive, and the second holder of, FAI's Aeromodelling Gold Medal. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Evelyn Sipes Kuhn, and was survived by his son. (Bio provided by A Horan)
