EAU CLAIRE -- George P. Bailey, 87, of Eau Claire, died on Dec. 24, 2003, at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Sodus, with the Rev. David Cheyne officiating. Memorials may be made to Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 4071 Naomi Road, Sodus, or to Hospice at Home, P.O. Box 990, South Haven, Mich. 49090. Bowerman Funeral Home, Eau Claire, is assisting the family with arrangements.

"G.P." was born on Feb. 29, 1916, in Pipestone Township, the son of Andrew N. and Charlotte (Preble) Bailey. He served his country in the United States Army. On June 17, 1944, he married Evelyn Phillips. He was a graduate of Eau Claire High School, attended Western Michigan University, and received his B.S. and Master's degrees in Special Education from Michigan State University. He taught in the public school system for 27 years, at Oak Grove, Columbian, Shanghai, Bertrand, St. Joseph City and Berrien Springs Sylvester schools and he retired after 10 years at the St. Joseph Catholic School in Watervliet, where he was a teacher as well as the principal.

He was a life member of the National Education Association and the Michigan Education Association, and he was past president of the Berrien Country Principals Association. His church membership was with the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, where he was actively involved, having played the piano for the choral group and for services. He enjoyed playing the piano and being in the outdoors on his tractor, brush-chopping over some of his land. He also enjoyed farming, and did that throughout his years as an educator.

He is survived by his daughter, Dianne (Rod) Alton of Ann Arbor; his son, Kevin P. (Karen) Bailey of Eau Claire; three grandchildren, Kate Alton of Ann Arbor, Debbie (Roger) Weir of Stevensville, and Doug (Dawn) Schlipp of Eau Claire; six great-grandchildren, Levi, Zachary, and Isaac Weir, and Tiffany, Hillary, and Haily Schlipp; and one brother, Max Bailey of Adrian, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; his brother, Worth Bailey; and his parents.
