"Enlisted as Captain, 9th Tennessee Calvary, in defense of his Southern home, was captured January 3rd, died 23rd 1864, at Rock Island, Illinois, Master Mason."

This is a memorial marker. Captain Biffle is actually buried at Confederate Cemetery, Grave #279, Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois. This was confirmed by a letter from the Department of the Army, Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois dated 19 February 2002.

The family always believed Captain Biffle was killed because he was related to Confederate Calvary Col. Jacon B. "Jake" Biffle. The official cause of death is listed as pneumonia.
