Rudolph Shelton Schmittou was born in Louise, Montgomery County, Tennessee. His father was Francis (Von) Schmittou and his mother was Harriet Newel Green Schmittou. He served in World War I with the American Expeditionary Force from May 19, 1918 to May 12, 1919. He was the brother of Mai Meredith Schmittou's first husband, Marvin Schmittou.
