Mr. Gabbert was born May 15, 1913, in Senatobia, the second of five children of Meriwether William and Ruby Magee Gabbert. In his formative years, he attended the Senatobia public schools, the University of Mississippi, and Northwest Mississippi Junior College.
From 1932 to 1946, he lived in Washington, D.C. For nine years he worked in the post office of the House of Representatives while at the same time earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Commerce Science from Benjamin Franklin University. Additionally, he took courses at Georgetown Law School.
During World War II, Mr. Gabbert obtained the rank of lieutenant in the Navy while working for Admiral Ben Morrell in the Bureau of Yards and Docks and later serving on the USS Leyte aircraft carrier.
In 1947, he joined his brother, James, at Gabbert Oil Company in Senatobia and became sole owner in 1956. He subsequently built and operated four retail gas stations in Senatobia, the fourth being the first exclusively self-service gasoline station in North Mississippi.
For 86 years Mr. Gabbert was a member of First United Methodist Church, Senatobia, where he sang in the choir, was treasurer for 13 years, and served on various boards and committees. He was a state parks commissioner under Mississippi Governor J. P. Coleman in the 1950s, and in the 1970s he earned a Realtor's license.
Mr. Gabbert was married for 57 years to Kathryn DeCell Gabbert. They had four children and two grandchildren.

Jesse Magee Gabbert, 91, of Senatobia, died Friday, January 14, at Hermitage Gardens Assisted Living Residence in Southaven. Mr. Gabbert was born May 15, 1913, in Senatobia, the second of five children of Meriwether William and Ruby Magee Gabbert. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathryn DeCell Gabbert; two daughters, Kay Gabbert Inglett of Maggie Valley, N.C., and Patricia Magee Gabbert of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Scott DeCell Gabbert of Southaven and John Meriwether Gabbert of Senatobia; one sister, Clare Codman of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Gary Scott Magee Gabbert and James DeCell Gabbert, both of Southaven.
