Author. He wrote several best-selling books including the "Stolen Flower Man" in 1988, "The Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer" in 2006, and "The Butcher: Anatomy of a Mafia Psychopath" in 2009. Considered an expert on serial killers, sexual predators, and Mafia culture, he published several biographies on these characters. He also published three novels. He made appearances on numerous documentaries and television shows on these varied subjects. In 2005 he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, and with cancer in 2009, but he continued writing despite the complications of his illnesses, which included being wheelchair-bound and breathing with the help of a ventilator. Documenting his difficult experiences with ALS, his final effort was a memoir, "The Killer Within: In the Company of Monsters" published posthumously in 2011.
