Son of Jacob Steinmetz and Mary Taylor Steinmetz

Gerald Dwight Steinmetz, 66 of 3266 Frank Sherrill Road, Claremont, died April 12 at his home.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and was a retired maintenance manager for the U.S. Postal Service. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi Steinmetz of the home; daughter Sonja Steinmetz of Reidsville; son David Lee Steinmetz of Morganton; stepmother Virginia Steinmetz of Spokane, sister Mary Katherine Odegard of Arvada, WY; brother Robert Steinmetz of Sturgis, ND; Tim Steinmetz of Casper, WY; Jerri Cruz of Albuquerque, N.M.and several grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his son Thomas Steinmetz Evanoff.

Gerald's first wife was Merna C. Pippin. Their children are Jerri Lynn, Timothy & Thomas Dale.

Services were held at Bethel Lutheran Church by the Rev. Edward F. Meyer; burial was in the church cemetery with military rites by Hickory American Legion Post 48.
