Mr. and Mrs. George O. Benton of Hartford, Washington County, NY, observed their 60th wedding anniversary yesterday on the farm where they have lived the last 46 years. They spent the day quietly with only their immediate families present. Mr. Benton, who was 80 years old Feb. 26, retired from farming recently and sold his land and 12 cows only a month ago. Mrs. Benton observed her 80th birthday Dec. 18, 1958.
Mr. and Mrs. Benton have a daughter, Mrs. Donald F. Reid of Argyle and twin granddaughters, Mary and Mildred Reid who spend much of their time with their grandparents. Mrs. Benton is the former Laura Irish daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Byron Irish of Hudson Falls.
She spent most of her girlhood in Hudson Falls. She attended Hudson Falls Training class for teachers and then went to Fort Ann where she taught school for three years. There she met Mr. Benton, a native of Fort Ann and the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Benton.
They were married July 2, 1899, at Mr. Benton's home by Rev. E. A. Stoddard, pastor of Adventist Church. Her attendant was her sister, Mrs. Clifford Couture of Hudson Falls. Mr. Benton's best man was his brother, James E. Benton. Neither of the attendants are living.
Asked if she had any advice for 1959 brides, Mrs. Benton replied: "Quite a lot." “Each party needs to into consideration the other one,” she said. “There has to be a lot of giving and taking you can’t have it all one sided.”
