Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church, 2810 5th Ave., Rock Island. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Wheelan Funeral Home, 520 18th St., Rock Island. Mr. Hughes was born Nov. 2, 1922, son of James L. Hughes, former editor of The Rock Island Argus and manager of WHBF radio, and Helen LaVelle Hughes. He married Elena Joy Puscas in November 1943 at Truax Field, Madison, Wis. He served in the Army Air Forces in World War II and was stationed in England. Mr. Hughes was a life member of the 67th Squadron 44th Bomb Group. He worked on B-24s in the 8th Air Force.
He was a graduate of St. Ambrose University, Davenport. He retired from Prudential Insurance Co., Moline, and Hughes Business Technologies, Rockford.
Mr. Hughes was a life member of VFW Post 9759, Loves Park; charter member of the Irish Marching Society of the Quad Cities; member of the American Legion of Rockford; former member of the Knights of Columbus, Rock Island; former member of St. Vincent DePaul Society of Sacred Heart Church, Rock Island; and member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Rockford.
Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Joy Hughes, Rockford; sons, James L. (Kaye) Hughes III, Richard (Cindy) Hughes, Zachary (Cindy) Hughes, all of Rockford, Michael (Debbie) Hughes, Jackson, Mich., Kevin (Karen) Hughes, Milan, and Frank Hughes, Rock Island; daughters, Connie (Bob) Rowland, Milan, Nora (John) Naab, Kathleen (John) McGinnis, both of Moline, Hattie Burns, East Moline, Mary (Andy) West, Lyndon, Ill., Patrice Young, Kelley (Ken) Eitenmiller, both of Rockford, Christine (Tim) Moore, Wheeling, Ill.; brothers, Tom Hughes, Rock Island, Bill (Clare) Hughes, Roscoe, Ill.; a sister, Mary Dailey, St. Louis, Mo.; 49 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita DeReu.
