Born in Germany to Andrew Machalies and his wife (Arnea?). The name may be spelled Michaelis, a known local name. Lena Michaelis (Machalies) married Joseph Abt on July 28, 1903 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the youngest son of Joseph and M. Catherine Abt. At the time of their marriage his occupation was listed as Basket Maker. Later on his World War I registration card his occupation was listed as Food Distributor. On the April 1910 Federal Census from Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania: Lena Abt was listed as a boarder, age 29 born in Germany, married 8 years (1902); living with John and Ella Early; John Early was a Riverman. There was no listing for Joseph Abt on this census report. Lena died in Pittsburgh on October 6, 1923 at #1827 Tustin Street in Ward 1, of acute alchoholism. She was buried on October 14, 1923 from the R.E. Campbell Funeral Home of Sharpsburg, in Section 1, Range 22, Row 1, Grave 7. On the 1940 Federal Census from South Fayette Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania: Joseph Abt, as widowed, was listed as and Inmate/patient in the Mayview State Hospital (Pittsburgh City Home and Hospital in Mayview), South Fayette Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Joseph died there on October 18, 1946, and was buried in the Abt Family Plot: Section E, Saint Mary's Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
