In the death of Samuel Russell Meriwether, of Hayneville, which occurred in Birmingham Infirmary on the 13th of December, 1928, the community of Hayneville and the entire county lost from its citizenship a man conspicuous for many exceptional traits of character. He was born in the village of Sandy Ridge sixty eight years ago, and found his early life cast for development in the midst of uncertain civic affairs of the reconstruction period, but regardless of the untoward events which characterized that bitter period in the history of our state, he early developed those high traits of manly character, which with a strong mind and accumulating wisdom, carried him through life, eminently successful, at the same time commanding the respect and esteem of his fellow citizens. Apparently he was of a quiet, retiring, and conservative disposition, but those who knew him best knew that underneath his urbane and gentle manly disposition, there moved a force of hidden force and courage, equal to any occasion. While he stood for all things worthy, upright, and honorable yet he was never found lending his voice in bitter condemnation of his fellow man who might have erred. Hayneville is proud to say that he was one of our best citizens, and the community feels as though a member of its immediate family circle has been taken.

Mr. Meriwether is survived by two sisters, Mrs. T.B. Stone of Stone's Tank, Mrs. B. T. McWorter of Port Arthur, Tx., and a number of nieces and nephews, and his widow, who before their marriage, May 20, 1891, was Miss Rella Mushat, daughter of the late Dr. John Mushat.

Mr. Meriwether was for a number of years a member of the Hayneville Baptist Church.
