Author. She was a 20th century French-American novelist, poet, critic and translator. She had the honor of being the first woman to be elected to the Académie Française in 1980. A well-known novelist during the 1930s, she was a teacher and lecturer in America. She achieved international stature as a novelist with "Les mémoires d'Hadrien" in 1951. Other main works are: "L'oeuvre au noir," "Le labyrinthe du monde," "Comme l'eau qui coule," "Les temps, ce grand sculpteur," "Mishima ou la vision du vide."
