John Arthur Ostertag, 101, St. Joseph, died Sunday, September 19, 2010, at his home.
He was born July 26, 1909, in Atchison, Kan., and was a former resident of Sabetha, Kan., moving to St. Joseph in 1959.
John served as a Seaman in the Merchant Marine serving in the Atlantic during World War II.
He married Enid Harris on August 12, 1933. She survives of the home.
He was a Sales Representative for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Atchison, Hiawatha, and Sabetha, Kan., and in St. Joseph from 1937 to 1974. He later worked at Shea Green House as a propagator.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Rose (Saggs) Ostertag; two brothers, Roy and Adrian Ostertag; sister, Annette Marlatt; two grandsons, Darren Ostertag and John Casey Ostertag; and granddaughter, Alicia Faye Ostertag.
He was a member of the Brookdale Presbyterian Church and a Charter member of the Genealogy Society of Buchanan County and Atchison, Kan. He was an active gardner.
John was actively involved in genealogical research since 1972. He had written over 100 publications and had written books on the histories of Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Gentry, Nodaway, Platte, and Worth Counties in Missouri and Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, and Nemeha Counties in Kansas.
Additional survivors include three sons: John B. Ostertag (Deborah), Winchester, Va.; Robert H. Ostertag (Linda), Coulee City, Wash.; and Kent A. Ostertag (Terry), Gilbert City, Ariz.; two daughters: Lynn Yazel (Roy), Independence, Mo.; and Anne Hall (Todd), Oregon, Mo.; sister, Catherine Armstrong, Atchison; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
