Gordon was born "Gordon Lewis Tipton," to Augustus Lewis Tipton and Cecile Purceller Tipton. Augustus passed away age 31 in an accidental fire event. Mrs. Tipton later married a Dallas dentist, Dr. Gustave R. Schmitt. Dr. Schmitt adopted Gordon and his sister, Marjorie, as his own. In regard to his birth name, Gordon was known to family and friends as, "Tip (or Tippey)"

Gordon graduated High School in Dallas, and attended Southern Methodist University.

Gordon lived out most of his adult life working as an oil drill core-samples analyst in Midland, Texas. He formed a side business using those core samples to make all kinds of polished rock products. Those included some stunningly beautiful lamps, commercial light fixtures, and desk-top pen and pencil sets.

S/Sgt Gordon L Schmitt was in Army Air Force with 351st Bomb Squadron in World War II. His plane was shot down over Germany Oct, 9, 1943. He was captured in Denmark by Nazi Germany. Imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3 for 349 days.
