Mom worked at Springs Mill early on, but became a stay at home mom when she started having kids. Mom and Dad grew very large gardens that required tending, weeding and picking, and she did most of the gardening, while Dad continued working at the Mill.

She sewed most of my clothes when I was small and she canned most of our food; we only went to Steele's Store on S. Market Street once a week for staples, and I was allowed to pick out some penny candy. Later, they shopped at the A&P on Elm and Main Street where I was allowed to have one coca-cola and some cheese puffs.

She was the best cook, and was especially fond of baking. She made the best pound cakes! But to be honest, everything she cooked was good.

Later in life, she was often sick and in and out of the hospital, with various, very serious illnesses. -Laura Lawless-5 Apr 2024
