Mary Jane is the daughter of John Comer and Louisa Jane Reavis. She is a sister to Amelia Ann, Rachel, Sallie, Edward William, Fannie, Nancy, Lena, Pernie Ethel and Pearl Comer.

Mary Jane married Norton Fielding Cass and they are the parents of Fielding Lorenzo, William Esau, Tabitha, Louisa Belle, Leora Alice, Ruby L and Minnie M Cass.

Fielding was admitted to the state hospital in Morganton in 1920 and died there of pellagra four months later.
