Dale H. Wenstrom, Galesburg Chapel
age 85 of 683 N. Cherry St. Galesburg, Ill. died Friday October 22, 2010 at Seminary Manor at 10:40 AM.
He was born August 9, 1925 in Victoria, Ill. the son of Fred and Hilda Peterson Wenstrom. He married Beverly Brewer on June 19, 1952 in St. Louis, Mo. She preceded him in death November 14, 1979. He later married Bonnie Baxter on May 5, 1990 in Henderson Grove, Ill. She proceeded in death February 23, 2005.
Dale is survived by one daughter Cherrie and son-in-law, Brian Layton of Bristow, Va., two brothers Arthur Wenstrom of Florida, and Kenneth Wenstrom of Galesburg, three sisters Irene Clayton of Princeton, Ill., Jean and Bill Britton, and Ruth Rouland both of Galesburg, three grandchildren: Blake, Amber, and Tori. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Dale was raised around Henderson, Ill. and spent a number of years in the military. He lived in Quincy, Ill. for fifteen years moving back to Galesburg in 2007.
He served in the US Army 27th Infantry Regiment from 1944-1946 during WW2 in the Philippines Then served from 1959-1966 in the US Army serving again with 27th Infantry Regiment in Viet Nam from 1965-1966 as a tanker. During his last tour of duty he was the oldest soldier graduating and serving as a drill sergeant. He retired from the military in 1982.
He was a farmer for thirteen years then worked for the former Galesburg State Research Hospital as their head painter until retirement. Dale was a former member of the Quincy Lutheran Church and a present member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Henderson Grove, Ill.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday October 27, 2010 at Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Kurt Carlsen officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5-7 PM at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel. Burial will be at Henderson Grove Cemetery with military service conducted by the Galesburg American Legion Post # 285. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
