A lawyer by profession, Adam Huntsman served five terms in the Tennessee state senate (1815-21 and 1827-31) and one term in the U.S. House of Representatives representing the 12th Congressional District (1835-37). He was also elected as a delegate for Madison County to the Tennessee Constitutional Convention in 1834. He is best known for opposing and defeating David Crockett for Congress in 1835, a loss that prompted Crockett's departure from Tennessee and his eventual death at the Alamo. Huntsman was a prominent Democratic Party leader in West Tennessee with close political ties to Hugh Lawson White, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk. He wore a wooden peg-leg as the result of losing a leg "in an indian [sic] fight during the last war," according to David Crockett. It is believed that it was lost during the Creek Indian War.
