Born Eleanor Katherine Adair, she was the youngest child of US Senator and Governor John Adair. In 1820 she married Joseph M. White, who served as Florida's non-voting Delegate in Congress for 12 years. A renowned beauty, her husband and she traveled throughout the United States and Europe as her husband researched colonial land claims, and her circle of friends included Washington Irving, John Quincy Adams, Tallyrand, Prince Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III), and Caroline, Queen of Naples.
